Growing concern about the environment and the increasing popularity of alternative transport have encouraged many countries to make their cities more bicycle-friendly. This is good news for travellers on a budget as it is much cheaper and quicker to sightsee in a city by bicycle than to pay for public transport. And remember, if you are travelling around Europe by train or even by aeroplane it is more than easy to take your two-wheeled companion with you. Alternatively, you can hire one at your destination. Here is a list of the 10 most bicycle-friendly cities in the world.
10. Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona has a public bicycle service so that residents can pick a bike up at one station in the city and drop it off at another. Tourists can also use this service. Barcelona has an extensive network of bicycle paths.
9. Berlin, Germany
With 390 miles of cycle paths and about 500,000 users every day, Berlin is actively encouraging its residents to opt for the bike and protect the environment. In fact, less than half of Berliners own a car.
8. San Francisco, California
There are around 63 miles of cycle lanes in San Francisco and they are used by about 40,000 of the population.
7. Perth, Australia
This Australian city has more than 435 miles of cycle paths.
6. Sandnes, Norway
Sandnes is the most cycle-friendly city in Norway and is famous for its bicycle initiatives and projects aimed at making the town more accessible for cyclists.
5. Davis, California
The city has over 100 miles of cycle lanes and has actively promoted the use of the bicycle.
4. Paris, France
Paris is the starting point of perhaps the most famous bicycle race in the world, the Tour de France. It is also home to the Vélib, a public bicycle rental programme.
3. Copenhagen, Denmark
Approximately one third of the workforce cycle to work because it is quick and easy. In fact, it is much more efficient than going by car.

The strong bicycle culture together with various initiatives and projects have converted Portland into a healthier and more energetic city with lots of cycle lanes.

You all knew the answer before even reading. Amsterdam (and the rest of The Netherlands) is without a doubt the most bicycle-friendly destination in the world. In fact, 40% of all traffic in the city is by bicycle.
