Healthy eating when travelling

Posted May 25, 2011 1 Comment

It isn’t easy eating healthy when on the road and most people who do spend a long time travelling long to cook their own meal and eat something healthy at some stage. Just to give you an example, there are 1,668 fast food restaurants along Route 66 in the USA and so finding somewhere to eat good food is difficult and healthy food is expensive. Here are a few tips for eating healthy while travelling.

Pack a cool bag

A cool bag or box is an absolute must if you are going on a road trip. You can fill it up with fresh fruit and vegetables before you set off and even refill it along the way. Apart from fruit and veg you can even take prepared pasta salads, chilled soup or sandwiches, tortilla fillers including chicken strips or hard boiled eggs. Other popular things are hard cheeses, spreads and bread.

Eat small, frequent meals

Travelling or not travelling, they say that it is best to eat small, frequent meals because it will keep your energy sources up all day. This will make your stomach shrink and you will feel full even though you eat less. This is the best way to maintain your energy levels while on the road.

Freezer packs

It is a good idea to freeze bottles of water and use them as ice packs, as well as block ice melts. If you are staying in a hostel you can refreeze them in the kitchen.

Pack healthy snacks

You can always pack some dried fruit, nuts, cereal bars, cereal, biscuits, and even crisps and chocolate. These things do not need to be stored in a particularly special environment so you can keep them anywhere.
